David Cain

David Cain (1928–2017) was an American painter and photographer known for his impressionistic approach to landscape painting, with a focus on the way light at different times of day transforms the natural world. His work is deeply observational, capturing the subtle shifts in color, tone, and atmosphere that define a scene. Reflecting the influence of Impressionist masters such as Monet, whose treatment of light and color resonates strongly in his compositions. He was preoccupied with what the eye sees, using the play of light to structure his canvases. Nature in his work is not depicted as something to be commanded, but as an inviting presence — a “velvety voice” encouraging viewers to relax and enjoy the moment. His paintings have also been exhibited in a number of museums, with the Whitney Museum and others among those who have purchased them.
